My Evolution: Hospital to Homebirth

During my first 2 pregnancies, there weren't even any questions on my mind, really. I'd be in the hospital, on my back, with an epidural and an OB delivering my babies. After those first 2, I started to learn more about my options in labor and for my 3rd pregnancy I found a midwife with an excellent reputation who still delivered in a hospital. I wasn't quite ready to opt for a homebirth, though I was definitely curious. I ended up laboring at home with my husband and my doula until I hit transition, then endured the worst car ride ever to the hospital where I delivered my perfect 3rd baby unmedicated 30 minutes after checking in. The fact that I'd done it unmedicated and that the car ride was so awful started me thinking I might be able to handle a homebirth on my next baby. Laboring at home was ideal - kneeling beside my bed with my husband breathing with me, feeding me peanuts and Gatorade between contractions, in a dark room, totally supported and at peace. Then, to seal the deal, I started hearing amazing, reassuring stories about a local homebirth midwife, and when I got pregnant with my 4th (currently 18 weeks pregnant!), I made an appointment with her. My experience so far has been amazing and nothing at all like a typical OB appointment. The office is in a beautiful old home. The appointments happen on a big comfy couch and I am never rushed. We laugh and share crunchy hippy remedies for various issues while my 3 kids play on the floor. No concern of mine is ever dismissed and I always feel heard and respected. It's exactly the way prenatal care should be! We should feel nurtured, cared for and loved throughout our pregnancies, and midwives are perfectly suited for this job! I wish everyone could experience this kind of prenatal care :)
