Birthing My Way

I’ve been fascinated by the concept of childbirth for many years. By the time I found out I was pregnant, I had already researched everything I could think of about pregnancy and childbirth and I knew I wanted to see a midwife. I loved the idea of seeing a medical professional who would treat me as an individual and help me have the kind of birth I envisioned. The midwife I chose made me feel so comfortable and at ease during my first prenatal visit that I felt like I was talking with an old friend. I knew right away that I wanted her to be the one to care for me during my pregnancy and deliver my baby. I went into labor at exactly 41 weeks. I was doing well at first but as I progressed, I started to have some really intense back labor. The pain was so strong that I didn’t how I was going to make it through. When my midwife walked into my hospital room she had an instant calming effect on me. For the next few hours she stayed with me and helped me through each contraction. She suggested different positions that I could labor in but ultimately let me decide what I felt was best for me. When the pain was at its worst and I was unable to stay on top of my contractions, she got right in my face and helped me focus and breathe through the pain. I was crushed when I found out my midwife was supposed to go off duty early that evening and the OBYGN from her practice would likely be the one to deliver my baby. She refused to let that happen though and ended up staying with me late into the night until my son was born. I am so grateful to my midwife for the care and support she gave me through my pregnancy and delivery. I know my son’s birth would not have been the emotional and empowering experience it was without her.
